He has built a reputation for developing innovative lighting designs for site-specific productions\u00a0with Against the Grain and Tapestry New Opera. His passion is creating the lighting for large-scale musicals and operas, and for new works.<\/p>\n<p>Jason has lit productions at several of Canada\u2019s largest opera companies including the <strong>Canadian Opera Company &amp; Vancouver Opera<\/strong> (<em>Carmen<\/em>), <strong>Edmonton Opera<\/strong> (<em>The Tales of Hoffmann*<\/em>). In 2014, made his American debut with\u00a0<em>Macbeth\u00a0<\/em>at the <strong>Minnesota Opera Company<\/strong>. He has worked with acclaimed directors <strong>Tim Albery<\/strong> (<em>Imeneo*, Dido and Aeneas*, M\u2019Dea Undone**<\/em>), <strong>Paul Curran<\/strong> (<em>The Rape of Lucretia<\/em>*) and <strong>Tom Diamond<\/strong> (<em>The Marriage of Figaro, Oksana G<\/em>.**).<\/p>\n<p>His theatre designs include productions for the\u00a0<strong>Stratford Festival<\/strong> (<em>The Merry Wives of Windsor,\u00a0<\/em><em>The Trespassers**<\/em>), <strong>Young People\u2019s Theatre<\/strong> (<em>Mary Poppins,\u00a0<\/em><em>Blue Planet, James and the Giant Peach, Jacob Two-Two and the Hooded Fang**, Seussical<\/em>), <strong>Tarragon Theatre<\/strong> (<em>Hamlet,\u00a0<\/em><em>Enemy of the People, Peace River Country**, The Summoned**, Abyss**, Sequence, The Ugly One<\/em>), <strong>Canadian Stage<\/strong> (<em>This, <\/em><em>The Arsonists, A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Winter\u2019s Tale)<\/em>, and the <strong>Shaw Festival<\/strong> (<em>Arms and the Man<\/em>), as well as <strong>Theatre Calgary, Drayton Entertainment, <\/strong>and the <strong>Soulpepper Theatre Company<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, Jason was invited to become the Resident Lighting Designer for <strong>Against the Grain Theatre<\/strong>, cementing a relationship with the company that extends from the company&#8217;s first fully-mounted production. For <strong>Joel Ivany<\/strong> and AtG, Jason has lit <em>La Boh\u00e8me**, Turn of the Screw*, Figaro\u2019s Wedding**, Pell\u00e9as et M\u00e9lisande*, Death and Desire**, #UncleJohn**, AtG\u2019s Messiah, A Little Too Cozy**<\/em><em>,<\/em>\u00a0<em>Bound,<\/em>\u00a0and <em>Kopernikus*<\/em>. \u00a0He has also lit\u00a0<em>Ayre<\/em> which has been remounted internationally.<\/p>\n<p>Jason is a regular guest instructor the <strong>National Theatre School of Canada<\/strong> and <strong>Banff Centre for the Arts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, Jason collaborated with director Joel Ivany and designer Camellia Koo to conceive a production of\u00a0<em>I Capuletti e i Montecchi<\/em>\u00a0that placed third in the biennial <strong>European Opera-Directing Prize<\/strong>.\u00a0 He has been nominated eight times for Dora Awards for Outstanding Lighting Design, and is a prot\u00e9g\u00e9 recipient of the prestigious Siminovitch Prize in Theatre. \u00a0He has won a\u00a0<em>Montreal English Theatre Award<\/em> for his lighting of\u00a0the NAC\/Centaur co-production of\u00a0<em>The Adventures of a Black Girl in Search of God<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Jason holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from York University. After completing his studies, Jason continued his education by working as an assistant and associate designer on over 40 major productions with noted international designers such as Thomas Hase, Max Keller, Peter van Praet &amp; Robert Carsen, Robert Thomson, Bonnie Beecher, Michael Whitfield, and Alan Brodie.<\/p>\n<p>Upcoming projects include\u00a0projects at the Charlottetown Festival, Tarragon Theatre, and a new production of <em>The Louder We Get\u00a0<\/em>(formerly\u00a0<em>Prom Queen the Musical)<\/em> at Theatre Calgary..<\/p>\n<p>Jason holds both American and Canadian citizenship, and makes his home in Toronto with his wife and his daughters.<\/p>\n<p>*indicates new opera production<br \/>\n**indicates world premier<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jason is a Toronto-based designer working in theatre and opera.
