Jason is a Toronto-based designer working in theatre and opera. He has built a reputation for developing innovative lighting designs for site-specific productions\u00a0with Against the Grain and Tapestry New Opera. His passion is creating the lighting for large-scale musicals and operas, and for new works.<\/p>\n
Jason has lit productions at several of Canada\u2019s largest opera companies including the Canadian Opera Company & Vancouver Opera<\/strong> (Carmen<\/em>), Edmonton Opera<\/strong> (The Tales of Hoffmann*<\/em>). In 2014, made his American debut with\u00a0Macbeth\u00a0<\/em>at the Minnesota Opera Company<\/strong>. He has worked with acclaimed directors Tim Albery<\/strong> (Imeneo*, Dido and Aeneas*, M\u2019Dea Undone**<\/em>), Paul Curran<\/strong> (The Rape of Lucretia<\/em>*) and Tom Diamond<\/strong> (The Marriage of Figaro, Oksana G<\/em>.**).<\/p>\n His theatre designs include productions for the\u00a0Stratford Festival<\/strong> (The Merry Wives of Windsor,\u00a0<\/em>The Trespassers**<\/em>), Young People\u2019s Theatre<\/strong> (Mary Poppins,\u00a0<\/em>Blue Planet, James and the Giant Peach, Jacob Two-Two and the Hooded Fang**, Seussical<\/em>), Tarragon Theatre<\/strong> (Hamlet,\u00a0<\/em>Enemy of the People, Peace River Country**, The Summoned**, Abyss**, Sequence, The Ugly One<\/em>), Canadian Stage<\/strong> (This, <\/em>The Arsonists, A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream<\/em>,\u00a0The Winter\u2019s Tale)<\/em>, and the Shaw Festival<\/strong> (Arms and the Man<\/em>), as well as Theatre Calgary, Drayton Entertainment, <\/strong>and the Soulpepper Theatre Company<\/strong>.<\/p>\n In 2015, Jason was invited to become the Resident Lighting Designer for Against the Grain Theatre<\/strong>, cementing a relationship with the company that extends from the company’s first fully-mounted production. For Joel Ivany<\/strong> and AtG, Jason has lit La Boh\u00e8me**, Turn of the Screw*, Figaro\u2019s Wedding**, Pell\u00e9as et M\u00e9lisande*, Death and Desire**, #UncleJohn**, AtG\u2019s Messiah, A Little Too Cozy**<\/em>,<\/em>\u00a0Bound,<\/em>\u00a0and Kopernikus*<\/em>. \u00a0He has also lit\u00a0Ayre<\/em> which has been remounted internationally.<\/p>\n Jason is a regular guest instructor the National Theatre School of Canada<\/strong> and Banff Centre for the Arts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n In 2011, Jason collaborated with director Joel Ivany and designer Camellia Koo to conceive a production of\u00a0I Capuletti e i Montecchi<\/em>\u00a0that placed third in the biennial European Opera-Directing Prize<\/strong>.\u00a0 He has been nominated eight times for Dora Awards for Outstanding Lighting Design, and is a prot\u00e9g\u00e9 recipient of the prestigious Siminovitch Prize in Theatre. \u00a0He has won a\u00a0Montreal English Theatre Award<\/em> for his lighting of\u00a0the NAC\/Centaur co-production of\u00a0The Adventures of a Black Girl in Search of God<\/em>.<\/p>\n Jason holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from York University.
